Actually, he was a Catholic. One of the obstacles he encountered while campaigning for the Presidency was a popular rumor that, if elected, he would answer to the Pope instead of the American people. (I don't know if the Pope gives wedgies or not...)

John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States, was a practising Catholic. He was acutely aware of the dangers of mixing religious and political institutions, and so was a strong proponent of the separation of church and state, saying (letter to Glenn L. Archer, 23 February 1959) "There is no doubt in my mind that the pluralism which has developed under our Constitution, providing as it does a framework within which diverse opinions can exist side by side and by their interaction enrich the whole, is the most ideal system yet devised by man."

In spite of his reputed extra-marital affairs, John F. Kennedy could be considered a good Christian because he knew the boundaries of his faith and respected the views of others.
