An "extra" in cricket is a run that is attributed to a batting team but not to any specific player. There are five types of extras:

  • No balls - If a bowler fails to make a proper delivery, stepping out of bounds or not having the arm properly set, the umpire will call a "no ball". The delivery does not count as part of the over, and the batting team is awarded one run. If runs are taken during this delivery, the runs are counted as part of the "no ball".
  • Wides - If a delivery is deemed too far from the batsman to properly hit, the umpire will call a "wide". The delivery does not count as part of the over, and the batting team is awarded one run. If runs are taken during this delivery, the runs are counted as part of the "wide".
  • Byes - If a batsman does not hit a delivery but for whatever reason gets an opportunity to take a run while the ball is still in play (such as it being mishandled), then any runs scored as a result count as "byes". An unhit ball that manages to reach the boundary would be counted as four byes.
  • Leg Byes - If a delivery hits a batsman other than on the bat (and is not considered an LBW) while the batsman tried to either strike or avoid it, but for whatever reason the batsman gets an opportunity to take a run while the ball is still in play (such as it being mishandled), then any runs scored as a result count as "leg byes".
  • Penalties - Certain violations of the rules by the fielding team can result in the umpire punishing the fielding by awarding penalty runs to the batting team.

Extras are runs not scored by the batsman they are: Wides- A ball delivered so wide or so high that a batsman cannot reasonably reach it. Scores one penalty run.- Counts against the bowler. No-Ball. If the bowler oversteps or delivers a full toss above waist height. One penalty run. (any runs scored by the batsman are not extras)- Counts against the bowler. Byes- Runs scored if the batsman scores runs when the ball does not touch the bat or any part of the batsman's body. Note if this occurs off a wide then the runs are scored as wides. Does not count against the bowler (unless wide) Leg-byes- Runs scored if the ball hits the batsman without touching the bat. Does not count against the bowler.

Umm I think you mean the twelfth man (or woman I suppose). They carry the drinks, and sometimes field if someone is injured.
