Censorship used in World War 2 was an important tool to deprive the enemy from learning about important information such as location and plans, as well as tangibles including funds and commodities. It was aimed to protect military operations against eavesdroppers. If the letters sent to and from the soldiers contained valuable information, then there would be a risk of the plans failing if they fell into spies' hands. Another advantage for censorship was to increase public moral and enthusiasm. By minimising and reducing the impact, people are forced into thinking there are not many casualties and Australia may still be able to win the war. The third aim was to collect myriad intelligence that could possibly be turned against the enemy countries.
Disadvantages:
Australian communities were widely aware that the government censored lots of information by 1942. It was resented as well as criticised as they felt that their government was withholding the truth and manipulating the Australian public. Some Australians even mistrusted any information given out by the government.
