I'm currently researching this question myself, as I'm investigating a house where Plumbing penetrates the return air ductwork. My initial opinion was "hell no", but as I look into it further, I can't find any supporting arguments anywhere.

So, I'll say it's a bad idea, as water may condense on the piping and extra humidity may be fed back into the A/C system. Cold, humid air is ripe for breeding molds. Your A/C is supposed to be sized properly to remove excess humidity, and plumbing in the return air may upset the balance.

I can't really say pipes in ductwork will do this, but I've seen plenty of cases where an A/C is cooling a space, but it does it TOO fast, and doesn't remove enough humidity. What happens in this case is water condenses in the supply ductwork where mold can breed which then sprays out everywhere everytime the A/C comes on. Worst case.

If you're stuck with the condition and can't easily relocate the plumbing, at the very least I'd recommend insulating the pipes, and making sure where they penetrate is thoroughly sealed.

As for wiring penetrations, I'd avoid doing this as well, especially with metal duct, where vibrations can cut the wiring's insulation over time. If you get an electrical fire in a metal ductwork system, a whole structure could literally go up in flames in seconds. I had the displeasure of seeing the aftermath of that once, as well.

However, I have seen the low voltage wiring for the A/C thermostat run through the return air ductwork. Also, if you have a smoke/fire shut-off for an A/C, wiring for that will also be located in the return air duct.

No. What if the that waste line erupts and spews sewage all through that supply duct ... imagine the smell and all the excessive cleanup that would be required. This would also not meet any building code requirements, either.

What causes electrolysis in plumbing?

Electrolysis in plumbing affects the copper pipes used. If electrical wiring is installed too closely to copper water pipes, the electrical current running through the wiring charges to copper piping combined with the water and its properties causes electrolysis in the copper water pipes thereby weakening them.

Do you need to know anything about electric to install a shower?

Electricity is generally not involved in a plumbing project, unless you plan to install recessed lighting over the shower area. For the most part, plumbing and wiring are kept separate.

Can wiring and plumbing be located in the same chase?

No most certainly not, firstly, if laying copper water pipes and then you lay wiring next to it, it doesnt matter how much of insulation there is it will cause electrolosis. And weaken the pipe causing it to burst therefore affecting the electrical wiring and water and electricity do not go well together. Secondly chasing galvanised pipe into a wall is definitely not recommended because when the galvanised pipe "sweats" it will start to rust as the moisture just sits in the wall also causing the pipe to burst and affecting the electrical wiring. There must be a minimum 200mm between the chasing for electrical wiring and plumbing pipes.
