You state that you are mailing them TO YOURSELF. You must be the patient and the prescription in your name - and the containers labelled in your name - it is legal if you are mailing them to yourself (i.e.- from your 'regular' home to a summer vacation cottage, for example). BUT, since they are addressed to YOU, no one has the authority to open and/or use them for themselves. You cannot claim ignorance if you are mailing them to yourself but have no real intention of being there to receive them. You could be considered to be knowingly 'aiding and abetting' a criminal offense if they are subsequently used by someone else at the receiving address. This answer is not meant to apply to mail sent into, or out of, the US. I have no knowledge of International Postal Regulations.

I don't think anyone is going to stop you. Unless USPS confiscates the package, no one is going to say anything. I've mailed OTC's to someone before, loose, so I don't know why you wouldn't be able to mail prescriptions. I have a family member that receives prescriptions all the time in the mail. True they are from the company, but they're coming in the mail!

I was told today by the USPS, that an individual cannot mail medication. It can only be sent by a pharmacy. The person said it was against the law, and you could be charged with drug trafficking.

Added: This is a true statement taken from the US Postal regulations, insofar as it relates to PRESCRIPTION meds.

Yes, it is legal to mail prescription drugs, from a pharmacy to a patient, anyway. There are dozens of different online prescriptions filled each day - for both over the counter and doctor prescribed medications.

What you need to determine, however, is the rules regarding Importing and Exporting drugs if you are planning to order prescription drugs online from a company that is not located in your country of origin (or the country to where you want the drugs shipped). The pharmacy should be able to tell you whether not you can legally have your medications shipped before you place your order.

Yes. For example, I have prescription insurance coverage that allows me to have my doctor's prescription filled at a local retail pharmacy or to have the prescription faxed from my doctor's office or mailed to their regional mail order prescription service location and then shipped to my home address (prepaid). Mail Order Pharmacies are very efficient and cost saving to the consumer. They are actual licensed pharmacists who fill the prescriptions and they maintain a medical and medicine personal file for each consumer and are governed by the same strict laws that legitimate pharmacies do. The big advantage to the prescription service by mail programs are for those consumers who take medication on a regular basis (such medicine is known as "maintenance medication." For example, I am required to take a medication once a day for Asthma and will be taking it indefinitely to control and stabilize asthma symptoms, which makes going to a local retail pharmacy for thirty tablets every thirty days is a bit unnecessary and annoying. Because if my RX insurance company offers mail order service then when I get a new prescription written, my doctor writes the quantity for a 90-day (or 3 month) supply and instead of paying the local store $10.00 each month, I get 90 tablets for $20.00 which saves money and time. One of my medications that I am prescribed on a regular basis is a controlled substance. Again, I have a choice to take it nearby and have it filled for a 30 day supply at a time for $5.00. But if I chose mail order service with delivery to my verifiable home address, it would contain a 90 day supply for about $10.00. It is legal and safe and carefully controlled. My husband's physician wrote a prescription for him that fell into a controlled substance category and was expected to last at least 6 months. The doctor's office is quite far from us but getting a refill every month was impractical. I asked the pharmacist located in his doctor's medical building about mailing the next refill to our home address instead, and after conferring with my husband's doctor, agreed to mail it by the United States Postal Service with an additional cost for insurance and paid in advance with a credit card.

the actual hard copy prescription isn't supposed to be, but i don't think its a punishable crime. but you can't fill a prescription for a controlled substance with a mail order pharmacy.

Well...depends on the drug. Controlled substances have to be picked up in person, but drugs that aren't on a DEA schedule are mailed all the time.

Your little brother left his medication at your house is it legal for you to mail it back to him?

Yes, it is legal. Mail order pharmacies regularly mail prescription medication. Take the weather into consideration when mailing it, though. I would mail it overnight and make sure your brother knows when it's arriving so that it doesn't stay in a baking hot or freezing cold mailbox for any length of time. Most medication is temperature sensitive.

Order Prescription Drugs by Mail for Cost Savings?

If your doctor has prescribed a medication that you expect to be on indefinitely, you can realize a big cost savings by ordering your prescription drugs by mail. That is because you are allowed to order up to a 90-day supply by mail order, as opposed to getting only a 30-day supply from your local pharmacy. Your copay for three months may be the same as it would be for one month, depending on your insurance company.
