It'd be no trouble at all to make a very rich and creamy soup that's so high in calories that you won't lose any weight whatsoever.

But with a balanced content, and sensible amounts, a soup diet can indeed let you lose weight.

Eating soup is a good weight loss strategy, because soup contains a lot of water, and it therefore tends to fill you up without giving you as many calories as solid foods would to create the same degree of satiation. But I wouldn't recommend eating only soup. Hot soups contain no vitamin C since the cooking destroys the vitamin, and if you have no vitamin C in your diet you will get a serious disease called scurvy. So eat lots of soup, but also eat some fresh fruit and/or vegetables. Exercise should also be part of your weight loss plan; it is difficult (although not impossible) to lose weight by diet alone.
