No. It is not possible to contract AIDS without first having HIV. Technically AIDS is not a disease but a list of symptoms. HIV is the name of a virus. The virus destroys T4 cells which are part of the human disease defense system. When the body can no longer defend itself from a certain group of diseases, you die. AIDS was the name given to a particular set of symptoms when the body lost the normal ability to fight certain diseases. We now know that the body loses that ability because the HIV virus destroys T4 immune cells. Drugs that kill the HIV virus treat AIDS.

A lot of work is being done to stop the spread of AIDS by stopping the spread of the HIV virus. Male circumcision almost stops female to male transmission by sexual intercourse. Using worm medicine seems to have some effect in keeping women from catching HIV. Condoms help. Using new needles for every procedure in doctors' offices and hospitals stops the spread of HIV there. Using needle swap programs for drug abusers seems to help. Avoiding blood to blood contact helps. When HIV is no longer transferred from one person to another, AIDS will vanish.
