First, you can't "catch shingles" from someone. You can get chickenpox from someone who has shingles, but only if two things are true:

  • You have direct contact with the weeping shingles lesions; AND
  • You have not had chickenpox or chickenpox vaccine in the past.

You can't get chickenpox from someone with shingles if you are immune. You can't get it from being in the same room with them, either. A person with shingles can go about normal activities, including all work or school, as long as the lesions are covered.

The manufacturer of the vaccine say that you can get the shingles as this is a live virus that has been attenuated (made "weaker"). You should not get the chickenpox from it.

Another answer:

The manufacturer doesn't know if this will prevent shingles. They said that it will take several generations to know. If you get the chickenpox vaccine as a child, you should get the shingles vaccine as well later on to be sure.

No, you can't catch shingles from someone if you've had chicken pox. However, the chicken pox virus remains dormant for years and re-emerges as shingles. It often strikes people over 50, but does occur in younger people.

No, you cannot get shingles from a child who recently had a chicken pox shot. But if you have never had chicken pox there is a very very slight theoretical risk that you could contract chicken pox from them if they develop a chicken pox type rash, which would happen about 30-45 days after vaccination.

No shingles generally go on the roof
Shingles is what people might get if they are exposed to the chicken pox virus and they have already had chicken pox. It can be contagious so it is worth avoiding other people if shingles is suspected.

You are not likely to get chickenpox from someone if you had the vaccine. You can get shingles if you had chickenpox vaccine, but you don't catch shingles from someone. Shingles is caused by reactivation of chickenpox virus that is hidden in your own body after having chickenpox or getting the vaccine.

You can't get shingles from exposure to someone with chickenpox. However, you get shingles from reactivation of your own prior infection with chickenpox.

Can you get shingles from lying in a bed after someone else who had shingles say in a hospital?

Shingles is caused by the chickenpox virus. You do not get shingles from someone with shingles; you get chickenpox from someone with shingles. Then when you get older, you will get shingles because you had chickenpox. Or, you might get older and never get chickenpox. In that case, you will thank your mother for having you vaccinated against chickenpox when you were a child.

Will a baby who was immunized with varicella vaccine ten days ago get chickenpox from someone with shingles?

That is not a likely scenario. The varicella vaccine will already be effective, and the baby can only get chickenpox from direct contact with wet shingles blisters or ulcers.

Can you catch shingles from other children who have shingles?

No. While you can catch chickenpox, shingles comes from a virus already within you (chickenpox virus) so you can only have shingles if you have previously had chickenpox. I myself had shingles back when I was in the fourth grade but neither my brother nor my sister ever had it.

Can you get shingles or chickenpox from your daughter?

If you have already had exposure to chicken pox you will not get chickenpox again. However, you can still get shingles from exposure because it is a reaction of the previous infection.

Can you get chickenpox from someone who has shingles?

Yes, it is possible for someone to get chickenpox from a person who has shingles, but it's not easy. You can only get chickenpox from someone with shingles if you come in direct skin-to-skin contact with wet or weeping lesions. Once the lesions are crusted over, you can't get it. Since you haven't had chickenpox, which is the same virus as shingles (that you've now been exposed to), you'll probably end up with chickenpox.

You can get chickenpox, but not shingles, from someone with shingles. You can only get chickenpox from someone with shingles if you haven't had chickenpox or the vaccine before, and if you have direct contact with wet shingles blisters or sores.

How likely are you to get chickenpox from someone with shingles if you have not had chickenpox?

You could get chicken pox if you have never had it before. However, while your chances of getting chicken pox from someone with shingles is in the realm of possibility, you will rarely come across someone with shingles, since they are mostly home with the illness.
