No. However, ratings are set in place for a reason; if you are not comfortable asking a parent for movie tickets for the specific movie, you probably shouldn't watch it. You can and likely will be kicked out of the movie and/or movie theater if an usher catches you in an R-rated movie.

Yes, creating a copy or derivative work from a copyrighted original, without permission of the copyright owners, is a violation of copyright laws. You could be sued. It makes absolutely no difference what reason you might have for attempting to do such a thing.

Another answer suggests there could be some parallel universe where copyright laws do not apply:

No it is not illegal as long as the movie theater owner/representative does not ask you to leave the premises on their property (trespass on property/chattel). Videotaping a movie/television screen does not violate the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and is deemed as a "Fair Use" as long as it is not commercially distributed or used for profit.
