For the same reason that your lawn is not above or below ground,

or something like that.

Zero and 180 degrees longitude form the boundary between east and west,

so they are both, and they are neither.

Can you explain why 0 degrees longitude and 180 degrees longitude are not designated east or west?

Simply because it doesn't matter in either case. -- Zero east or zero west puts you on the Prime Meridian either way. (Beginning on the Prime Meridian, you may travel 0° east or 0° west, as you prefer, and you arrive at the same place either way.) -- 180° is half-way around any sphere. Regardless of which direction you decide to travel from the Prime Meridian, 180° east or 180° west puts you exactly half- way around the Earth, in the same place.

What is an example to explain how longitude and latitude are measured?

What is the longitude of London?

Difficult to explain without pictures, but here goes.... Imagine a circle drawn around the earth, from North to South and passing through both the North and South poles. This called a meridian, or Great Circle. A series of these circles can be drawn, each one being one degree apart, around the circle of the equator, and there would then be 360 such circles. The longitude of any place on earth is measured by how many degrees around is the meridian which passes through it. The starting point for this measurement could be anywhere on earth, but because of Britain's history as a major empire and sea power the starting point is in Greenwich, London. So, the longitude of Greenwich, London is 0 degrees.

Is it possible for a city to be located at N W Explain?

In the question, N could be a latitude North of the Equator, and W could be a longitude to the West of the Prime Meridian. But, the actual degrees required have been omitted. This means that the question is impossible to answer. Add the missing degrees and resubmit again: an example for Liverpool, England is 53 N 2 W.

Explain the relationship between longitude and the international date line?

The International Date Line is nominally the line of 180 degrees longitude, both east and west ... exactly opposite the Prime Meridian and half-the-earth away from it. The Line was drawn with some jogs and zig-zags in it for political reasons, mainly to avoid having it split island nations or contiguous areas of national interest.

What are the lines on the globe called?

The key lines are latitude and longitude. These are based on specific points. The equator is the latitude around the center of the earth.
