You can add salt to a chlorine pool, but you will not get the same effect as having a saline purification system. The fabulous feeling of the water in a salt water pool is a result of how the saline system produces and introduces the sanitizer to the water.

Adding ordinary salt to a pool wont do any harm and many people like the feel of it, Until recently the salt used in pools was exclusively sodium chloride the problem with that is that its not good for the garden and while the taste is not totally unpleasant it does take some getting used to. Now however you have a choice with the sort of salt you chose A new mixture of salt is becoming available using magnesium chloride and potassium chloride these have a really good effect on swimmers skin is far less toxic then ordinary salt and you can water the garden with the backwash.

∙ 9y agoYes you can add chlorine to a salt generated pool. But if you are using a Calcium Hypochlorite you must turn the salt generator OFF for 24 hours and premix it (1 pound at a time in a five gallon plastic bucket) then pour it in the pool. You should not have to add any chlorine tablets to the pool, however if you do it is best to put it into a feeder after the cell. However if you have to add chlorine tablets to the pool to supplement either your unit is way undersized or there is a problem with the generator.

∙ 12y agoIf by liquid chlorine you mean bleach (sodium hypochlorite aqueous solution), yes you can. Liquid bleach is preferable to powdered chlorine in any situation because it doesn't increase calcium levels. A salt water chlorine generator decomposes the salt into sodium hypochlorite and hypochlorous acid which decomposes into chlorine gas.
