If it is a traditional pension plan, it depends on the terms of the plan. Call your former employer or look through the plan documents to find out.

If it is a plan like a 401k, then you should be able to obtain the money after you leave your employer. Remember that you will pay taxes on the distribution plus possibly and additional penalty of 10%. Your employer will withhold 20% but the chances are good that you will owe a lot more when you fill out your tax return at the end of the year.

How do you cash in 401k?

If you are still employed by the company that sponsors your 401k plan then you will not be eligible to cash out of the plan. Instead, you can see if your plan offers either a 401k plan loan, or a 401k plan hardship withdrawal (not all 401k plans allow hardship withdrawals so you need to ask your plan administrator if your plan has this feature.)If you are no longer employed by the company that sponsors your 401k plan, then you are eligible to get your money out of your 401k plan. You can cash out of the plan, or rollover your 401k plan balance to an IRA. If you choose to rollover your 401k plan instead of cashing out, then you will not have to pay taxes or penalty taxes: rollovers to IRAs are not taxable transactions if you do them the right way.

Can you cash out a pension plan before you're fifty?

It is totally dependent on the individual plan (some even require it when no longer employed). Many simply don't allow any payouts until other age or events are met (like disability). Ask the administrator. You can expect the voluntary payout calculation, by age, lenght of employment, benefit available, etc to be a fairly small amount - and taxable upon receipt.

Is this a good time to cash in your pension?

Sometimes companies will give employees the option of taking a cash settlement in lieu of lifetime monthly payments under a defined benefit pension plan. In an era of low interest rates it may be difficult for an individual to invest a lump sum payment and realize a return that would equal or exceed the current monthly pension payment. Keep in mind that companies offering a cash buyout of a monthly pension payment are doing so because it is in their best financial interest.
