• Most dogs can swim; some better than others. Some dogs love water and others don't, but from the time of wild dogs they can swim for self preservation. Some dogs are water dogs and it comes naturally, but since breeders have inter bred dogs not all dogs know how to swim instinctively and can be taught to swim.

English bulldogs can't swim but some french bulldogs can- it really depends on how fit your dog is and the way it is built. Bulldogs of any type have difficulty breathing and in water that can become exasperated by water intake, as their snout is so close to the water level. A dog life jacket keeps a dog's head above water, gives buoyancy to prevent drowning and lessens water ingestion, which if salt water, is highly dangerous to dogs.
