IRS can take 15% of a social security check under the federal levy payment program and more under regular levy procedures. That happens very infrequently and only to people who have made themselves extra deserving of harsh treatment.

If it is creating a hardship you should contact IRS - ask that the account be reported currently not collectible and the levy released.

The IRS can garnish up to 15% of your Social Security check unless you work out an alternate repayment plan or are categorized as "uncollectible" due to income and expenses.

If your Social Security benefits are in a bank account that has funds from other sources, the IRS may levy the account and take a larger amount.

It would be in your best interest to contact the IRS to discuss your options.

The social security office will check to make sure that the person is entitled to social security payments, that he is fully covered, what his illness is, can he work at least part time. They will do a complete check on the background, the type of work they do, how much they earn and more. It can take months before they get back to you so be patient. Then you will not know if you qualify or not. It is not easy to get social security disability checks these days.

You will have to get a W-4V form from the IRS and fill it out the way that want them to withhold to stop the withholding amounts from your social security check and after you complete W-4V correctly you will have to get it back to the correct social security administration office address for this purpose or maybe to your local SSA office.
