Because of the genetic health issues they face, many scientists are of the notion that the existing ones should be sterilized, and no more should be bred unless they occur naturally.
At present there are no white Bengal tigers in the wild. This animal is only a genetic mutation of the Bengal tiger, and can occur in a normal colored litter at any time. The ones in captivity were bred for their beauty, and are very dangerously inbred. This leads to birth defects and major health problems. The thinking among scientists today, is to not breed any more of these animals, and let nature take its course. If any more are born in the wild, they should be afforded the protection of all Bengals, but should never be bred in captivity again, simply for man's pleasure.
No, this is due to the fact that the white tiger is not a real species of tiger, and is for the most part man made. They very rarely occur in the wild and die before adulthood when found in the wild because of lack of camouflage. The ones that're endangered are tigers themselves.

∙ 14y agoA white tiger is the result of a genetic mutation. The mutation is extremely rare in the wild, occurring in only about 1 in 10,000 births, and only in Bengal tigers. Because the absence of the usual orange coloration prevents a white tiger's ability to camouflage, white tigers born in the wild usually are killed by predators before reaching adulthood. The trait is recessive so both parents must have the gene, and pass it on, to result in a white tiger. White tigers are much more common in zoos. They are bred because of their popularity, but because the trait is recessive this usually results in inbreeding.

∙ 12y agoAnswer: A white tiger is NOT a separate species of tiger- and there is no such thing as a "separate species of tiger," because if it was a different species then it wouldn't be a tiger, now would it? You mean "subspecies."
A white tiger comes about due to a recessive gene in the parents' DNA. This gene has only been confirmed in the Bengal tiger, so if you see a white tiger and a normal Bengal tiger together (or even separate), they are the same species. It's like having a blonde person next to a brunette- it's simply a difference in genes.

∙ 14y agoIt is genetically modified in the sense that it was selectively inbred to be produced. The original white tiger carried two copies of a recessive trait that resulted in the white coat color (instead of Bengal/orange). This tiger had to be bred with one of its offspring (father/daughter cross) to produce more double recessive (white) tigers, since the recessive trait is so rare. They are very, very inbred and commonly are born with serious negative health issues.

∙ 13y agoWhite tigers are not albinos. White tigers have prominent stripes, but a true albino would have no stripes at all. White tigers are not separate species, just differently colored members of the same species.
