Of course there are sharks in the Gulf of Mexico. There are usually an average of 30 shark attacks per year although most of them are non fatal bites on ankles or legs. The number of shark attacks have become fewer and fewer lately with last year only netting 12 attacks. The most common Sharks in the Gulf are bull sharks and Nurse Sharks. Bull sharks can be very dangerous and aggressive and should be given respect and distance. This however should not disuade you from swimming and enjoying the gulf as there are many millions of residents and tourists that swim each year with no problems whatsoever.
The type of sharks in Mexico are Tiburon.
