Yes, it is possible to have side effects from an influenza vaccine. The most common side effects are: * Soreness, redness, or swelling where the shot was given * Fever (low grade) * Aches For more serious side effects, or if you think you are having an allergic reaction, please notify your doctor immediately. It is also important to note that many people shouldn't receive the vaccine without first consulting their physician: * People who have a severe allergy to chicken eggs. * People who have had a severe reaction to an influenza vaccination. * People who developed Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) within 6 weeks of getting an influenza vaccine. * Children less than 6 months of age (influenza vaccine is not approved for this age group), and * People who have a moderate-to-severe illness with a fever (they should wait until they recover to get vaccinated.) For additional information, please look at the FAQ on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) website: http://www.cdc.gov/FLU/protect/keyfacts.htm

It isn't possible for a flu shot to give someone the flu. The shot is made from inactive ("dead") virus particles that can not cause infection. Only the nasal spray vaccine might possibly, under rare circumstances, give someone the flu.

The ability of flu vaccine to protect a person depends on two things: 1) the age and health status of the person getting vaccinated, and 2) the similarity or "match" between the virus strains in the vaccine and those circulating in the community.

See the related questions below for more detail on this type of rare flu infection.

Yes, you can.

There are, at any given time, at least a dozen strains of flu. A flu shot protects against, usually, two or three of these. You can still catch any of the others.

See also the related question below for more details of reasons you might still get the flu even though you had a vaccination.

Yes you can because flu shots and any other vaccines work like this: they take a sample of the disease/virus. They get it to a weak form. After they do that, they cool it, store it, and test it. Then they inject that weak virus/disease into you so your body can learn how to create antibodies or build up resistance, as opposed to getting infected from the strong version of the disease/virus.

They don't shoot you, and it isn't a 'shot' of a drink, it's a needle in the arm. In the 2009-2010 flu season there was a mist as well as a shot for the vaccination for swine flu. In the 2010-2011 flu season the vaccine for swine flu protection is included in the one vaccination for the seasonal flu.
