What is a chigger?
What are chiggers? . Chiggers are tiny 6-legged creatures. They are known to attack people in wooded and/or damp areas. They are most commonly found during summertime when grass and weeds grow the heaviest. Chiggers do not bury themselves into the skin like small ticks do; they bite near the hair follicles and produce red welts which can be very painful and itchy. Chiggers are very small and cannot be seen without a magnifying glass. They usually feed on snakes, birds, and mammals; even humans. Chiggers usually bite humans where clothing fits tightly or in places like waistlines, armpits, and behind the knees. Chiggers are not known to carry disease in the United States. When they bite, the symptoms can continue for about a week. If symptoms are not treated, then they become a secondary infection.
How do you protect against chiggers?
Answer . The best product to use on the bite is chigger bite ointment. This ointment will take the "itch" away and promote healing. Since chiggers will readily climb over clothing to get to your flesh, use permethrin concentrate on shoes and pants. Permethrin is odorless, easy to mix and works well at keeping many pests away. Mix some up in a small spray bottle for spraying while afield. Be sure to use it on shoes and pants to keep them off and apply as needed. Though the aerosol is easy to use, the concentrate will prove to be more cost effective if you will be using a lot. As an added measure, you should treat your skin with some repellent as well. This way if the chiggers some how get past your clothes, they won't want to stick around on your treated skin. There are many repellents for use one your skin but the best is either citronella lotion or deet . Citronella has long been used as a general insect repellent and though not too effective when dispersed in the air, it does a good job as a contact repellent. This lotion can be applied as frequently as needed and won't pose a hazard to anyone that wants some type of protection. If the chiggers are really bad and you want the strongest protection available, the Deet would be the best choice. It will last longer then the Citronella and will work better overall. .
How do you treat chigger bites?
put nailpolish on any chigger bites to suffocate any chiggers buried in your skin. Then they will stop itching.. DO NOT put nail polish on chigger bites. The chiggers are not buried in your skin and are not attempting to float to your brain and eat it. Applying nail polish to open areas of injury, even small areas like these chigger bites, could potentially give you a secondary health concern you really don't want to deal with. Nail polish is poison really and you have to think in terms of "I'm getting ready to put poison on open sores that are on my skin." Again...the chigger is long gone by the time your itching starts. You could take a hot soapy bath to make sure if you are at all concerned. NO NAIL POLISH!!! NO KEROSENE! NO DIESEL! NO GASOLINE!. The intense itching is caused by the remnants of the chigger attack much like how a tick bite itches afterwards.. Wash the affected areas and then use Hydrocortisone anti-itch cream to help with the symptoms. Otherwise it is just a waiting game for the skin to heal.. In the future you should avoid high grass and wear some type of insect repellant such as Deep Woods Off or something of that nature. Take precautions like you would to avoid ticks.. As you have found. chigger bites can make your life miserable.

How do you pull a chigger out of your skin?
"The best precaution against chigger bites is simply taking a warm soapy bath with plenty of scrubbing as soon as possible after exposure. If you bathe at once, while the chiggers are still running over your body, you can wash them off before they bite. A bath will also remove any attached and feeding chiggers before you start to feel the itch.. Warm soapy water is all that is necessary to remove and kill chiggers. There is no need, and it is rather dangerous, to apply household products such as kerosene, turpentine, ammonia, alcohol, gasoline, salt or dry cleaning fluid. Don't do it.. Attached chiggers are removed by even the lightest rubbing. If you are away from civilization, you can remove attached chiggers before they do much damage by frequently rubbing down with a towel or a cloth.. What can you do to alleviate suffering if these precautions fail? Lotions will relive the itching somewhat, but no substance is completely effective. The only ultimate cure is time, since there is nothing you can do to dislodge the chigger's feeding tube, the true cause of your itch. You must simply wait until your body breaks down and absorbs the foreign object.. In the meantime, local anesthetics such as benzocaine, camphor-phenol and ammonium hydroxide may provide you with several hours of comfort at a stretch. Over-the-counter creams can also help. In rare cases, some people are allergic to chigger bites and require prescription medications from their doctor.". this is from: http://mdc.mo.gov/nathis/arthopo/chiggers/

What does a chigger bite look like?
Chigger bites look like tiny red dots in an infllamed field of welts. Perhaps as many as 6 or so per sq. centimeter. They itch like crazy.. Chiggers are the larval form of an arachnid that, once mature, eats only vegetation. This larval phase eats only once from humans, over a period of about 4-5 hours, and then drops off and encapsulates to form the mature form of the animal. Normally, they'd prefer a bird as a host (on which they don't itch).. Contrary to folklore, the chigger is NOT burrowed in under your skin. Chiggers are bright red, but are about the size of this period (.), so they are almost never noticed on the skin. What's happened is the chigger has bitten you and, over the last 4-5 hours, has ingected enzymes to disolve your epidermal cells. As the cells liquify, the chigger sucks them out as if with a straw. After a while, your body detects this attack, and causes the cells surrounding the cavity to solidify, making a hard, tube-like structure. THIS is what is itching. After a while, your own body will break down the tube and all will be well.. Chigger bites take approximately 10 days to heal. You can icepack the area, or try benzocaine or other numbing ointments, but the truth is you'll mostly have to suffer while your body fixes the problem. Try hard not to scratch.. Don't waste your time using folk remedies like placing nail polish over the red spots. It only complicates matters.. In the future, chiggers can be washed off before they burrow simply by taking a thorough shower.

I have them in my back yard in Yuma, Arizona. The larval stage appears every year between May and September. My back yard has lots of vegetation so it is a breeding ground for them. My immediate neighbors yards are filled with gravel and little else so they do not have them. How they got there, I do not know, probably came in on a plant I purchased (I ended up with a snail infestation that way). My doc informed that the reaction and blisters are classic examples of chigger feeding. I have learned how to protect myself against them but I forget every year to take precautions until the first itching and blisters show up. After September, the adults hibernate until the next breeding season.
