It is not possible to avoid having a pregnancy that carries a baby with Down syndrome. It is only during pregnancy that some tests can be done -- like triple (blood) test; amniocentesis (Fisher test) -- (after 12 weeks, 16-18 weeks of pregnancy), to know if the baby has Downs or not. Depending on the test results, one can decide to abort if it happens to be Down baby.

Ask your physician to perform an amniocentesis while you are still pregnant. I've had it and the peace of mind has been well worth it. Make sure you understand the risks of amniocentesis beforehand. If done at the appropriate time, you may still abort the pregnancy. Luckily, I never had to abort.

Down syndrome is an abnormality that occurs within a persons chromosomes. Sperm and eggs both have 23 chromosomes each. When combined to make a baby the new entity has 46 chromosomes. If there is an abnormality (which you cannot control) the baby will be born with 47 chromosomes, which will give it Down's syndrome. It is just one of those things you can not prevent in life. You just have to hope for the best.

Down's syndrome is more common if the parents are older, so staring your family younger will reduce the risk.

There are tests which will tell you if the child you are carrying has Down's syndrome, but they are not without risk to the child. You could use the information to prepare yourself for the needs of the child or to think about adoption (or abortion if that is an option for you). Many people choose not to test, due to the risk to the child.

No. Nothing the mother or father does or doesn't do causes their baby to have Down syndrome. Down syndrome happens at conception & the exact cause is unknown.

Be a healthy and fairly young mother. Age increases the risk.

No. Down syndrome is an Oops type thing. It occurs spontaneously. The only way to keep from having a baby with Down syndrome is abortion or adoption.

There is no way, it is a "mistake" in the genetic make-up of the child. but really there is no reason to avoid it.

No, Down Syndrome is strictly a genetically inherited condition; though taking drugs during pregnancy can lead to other health problems for the baby.

Can medications - such as Valium or Xanax - cause Down syndrome?

Nobody really knows exactly what causes Down Syndrome. Down Syndrome is a condition where a baby is born with an extra chromosome in their DNA. There is some evidence that says having a baby at an older age (40 and above) may have a higher risk of having a Down Syndrome baby. Taking medicines cannot cause you to develop Down Syndrome, because it's something you are born with; however, taking addictive drugs while you are pregnant does cause serious damage in the unborn baby, and many babies born to alcoholics and drug addicts have brain damage. There is a possibility that Down Syndrome could occur if the chromosomes are damaged.

What are the chances that a sibling of a Down syndrome brother will have a baby with Down syndrome?

After having one child with Down Syndrome, the likelihood of having another is about one percent. If the first child's Down Syndrome is due to translocation trisomy 21, the likelihood of another Down Syndrome child increases. As far as researchers know at this point, Down Syndrome is not attributed to the parents' behavior prior and/or during pregnancy or any environmental factors. The incidence of Down Syndrome does rise if the mother is older than 35, but it does not account for a large number of Down Syndrome children. Since more women are having children at ages younger than 35, then number of babies born with the syndrome is higher in younger age groups.

What is a prevention of Downs syndrome?

Experts recommend genetic counseling for persons with a family history of Down syndrome who wish to have a baby. A woman's risk of having a child with Down syndrome increases as she gets older. The risk is significantly higher among women age 35 and older. Couples who already have a baby with Down syndrome have an increased risk of having another baby with the condition. Tests such as nuchal translucency ultrasound, amniocentesis, or chorionic villus sampling can be done on a fetus during the first few months of pregnancy to check for Down syndrome. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends offering Down syndrome screening tests to all pregnant women, regardless of age.
