Laser pointers are legal in America as long as the output is no greater than 5mW (milliwatts). That does NOT mean they are completely safe. If you expose the human eye to a direct five milliwatt laser beam for an extended period of time, there will be damage.

∙ 14y agoOnly the powerful ones... If they are less then one Milliwatt (Mw) then they are legal. But if you are planning on bringing one into school I wouldn't recommend it, I got in deep sh*t today because I gave a few of them to my friends for Christmas presents. According to teachers they're illegal, lol. But In the UK they are not illegal unless they are over one Milliwatt (Mw)..

∙ 9y agoNo, the laser pointer itself is not illegal to own. The law is stated below, it seems like as long as you are responsible with it, you'll have no problems. 42.13. USE OF LASER POINTERS. (a) A person commits an offense if the person knowingly directs a light from a laser pointer at a uniformed safety officer, including a peace officer, security guard, firefighter, emergency medical service worker, or other uniformed municipal, state, or federal officer. (b) In this section, "laser pointer" means a device that emits a visible light amplified by the stimulated emission of radiation. (c) An offense under this section is a Class C misdemeanor.
