Yes, they do grow on trees! In fact, olive trees can grow very tall. They range in height from 26-50 feet at maturity... making the harvest of the taller varietals of olive a very dangerous job. Something perhaps not well known is that raw olives, while not poisonous, aren't edible. Freshly picked olives are far too bitter for human consumption. As a result, olives go through a brining process also known as "curing" before their delicious, nutritious benefits are consumed as food. However, olive oil can be consumed from pressings of raw fruit. Bon appetite!

Greece is part of the natural habitat of olive trees.

Olives are native to the coastal areas of the eastern Mediterranean Basin (the adjoining coastal areas of southeastern Europe, western Asia and northern Africa) as well as northern Iran at the south end of the Caspian Sea.

Olives grow on olive trees. They usually are grown domestically in olive groves. The olives grow well in sunny areas, with fertile soil, and adequate rainfall.

Yes. That is how we get olives in jars and cans and olive oil. Olives are normally never eaten directly from the tree; to be palatable they are cooked, pickled, brined, sugared or pressed.

What taste does olive have?

YES!!! The Kalamata olive has a MUCH stronger, saltier taste than your typical Spanish black olive. If you want something a little bit weaker in taste than the Kalamata go with a green olive, or stick with the black olives you find at the grocery store (they have the weakest taste). If you do want the best Kalamata or Greek Green Olives, I found that Martinis brand has the best taste, at the lowest price. And their olives are straight from Greece, and Kosher certified (incase that matters). You can find them on amazon.com or shop.martinisinc.com.

Can green olives be substituted for kalamata olives?

A couple of items work in a pinch, although there is no true substitute,1. Try Capers2. Pickled Peppers make a good alternativeBoth of these impart their flavor when cooking - so add them at the same time they specify the olives

Are olives only grown in Cuba?

Yes. Mexico started planting olive trees since 50-60 years ago, thus many trees are still growing and production is relatively small. Annual production of olives for 2010 was of approximately 14,400 tonnes, which pales against the largest producer in the world: Spain with 8.01 million tonnes during that same year.
