Termites are harmful because they consume wood with the help of bacteria or fungus in their digestive tracts. If you live in a wood-frame house like many of us, termites can eventually destroy enough of your home's wood to make it structurally unsound.
So, in other words, termites are harmful because they eat the roof over your head and the floors under your feet and the wood window frames that keep out the wind and the bad people who want to take your stuff and hurt your family.
No, carpenter ants live in already decayed and damp wood. Termites actually eat wood. Neither is a danger to humans unless termites cause your house to fall down while you are in it.
Carpenter ants can be. My daughter disturbed a rotten log some were nesting in. They got all over her legs and bit her. We got her out almost immediately, but she still had about 50-60 bite marks. They actually bit out very small little pieces of her skin. The next day the area didn't look so good and she had a slight fever. She had to be put on antibiotics. Her pediatrician explained to me that carpenter ants actually can carry impetigo.
No. They do not bite and they carry no diseases harmful to humans.
