This all depends on where you live. In the USA they are not considered firearms but in other countries they are considered firearms and heavily regulated. In the USA they have regulations that vary by state and county. There are also laws pertaining to air rifles but in the strict sense they are not firearms. As an example, if you try to take one on an airplane you will be detained and have it taken away and you may be charged with a crime. It doesn't matter if it a firearm or not.

Depends on your jurisdiction. Federally, no. But some counties rewrite the city code to define a firearm as any device capable of firing a projectile by means of expanding gas. This definition would cover any co2 powered airguns.

Improving answer: It not only depends on the jurisdiction, but also on the specific law(s) at issue, which might depend on where you are and what you're doing with the gun and how you are carrying it. For example, it might not be illegal to carry an air rifle in your car in a state where it would be illegal to do that with a real rifle, but it might be equally illegal to have either a pellet gun or a real firearm on school property.

Under US federal law, no, they are not.

In New Jersey they are.

There is no "fire" in an air rifle. Only compressed air or gas.

How do you identify a pellet rifle?

A pellet rifle has no firing pin. It also can not fire a bullet or gunpowder. It can not be made to do so either. The pellet has no charge (casing like a bullet) it just a pellet. However pellet rifles can be just as deadly as a real firearm. They use Air or C02 to project the pellet downrange. Some Pellet rifles are used for hunting, others for target practice. The Major difference between a firearm and an air rifle, is Gunpowder is use in Firearms and Air or C02 is used in Air rifles.

How are air rifles made?

Air rifles are made pretty much the same way a regular firearm are made. The difference is the firing system. A firearm is made using gunpowder and a bullet. Air rifles, similar in appearance, use 4 different power sources. Some use a spring and piston power-plant, others use C02 power and others use a pump under the barrel, and finally the large airguns use a Hand pump or Scuba tank to charge the system to 3000 PSI. these are called PreCharged Pneumatic airguns. Except for a few custom airguns and rifles. Air rifles are made on an assembly line system. Air rifles are made all over the world in most modern countries.
