The Manga is called Full Metal Alchemist, and so is the First Anime Series called Full metal Alchemist.

The first anime series did not follow the manga story. It was the view point of another angle of how the story could be fleshed out.

Since the original title was taken and they were not following or continuing the title series. They had the rename it as Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood.

If you prefer to see the series that follows the manga storyline, you would go and watch Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood.

If you honestly don't care and just want to watch it in the order of release.

You would watch Full Metal Alchemist First.

And then Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood.

'Fullmetal Alchemist' the anime is VERY different from 'Fullmetal Alchemist - Brotherhood'.

While 'Fullmetal Alchemist' was created first, it both creates and removes key characters in the manga, also completely changing the story line. Ultimately, the only thing they have in common is a few sole incidents, as well as the names and physical appearance of (most) characters.

'Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood' stays much closer to the manga's original story line, and since it is more recent, the quality of it is significantly better.

It's hard to say which is better, seeing as they are completely different. Most who read the manga before watching the anime claim that the original anime is a waste of time, but I personally, having watched Fullmetal Alchemist before reading the manga, enjoy both.

No. Brotherhood is a re-launching of the series from the beginning that is meant to follow the manga more closely.

The first FMA anime followed the manga up to what had been published at the time, but eventually overtook the manga's storyline up to around Hughes' death

and was forced to come up with the rest of the story itself. The manga took a very different route, however, which is what Brotherhood followed.

Okay, So the manga is called Fullmetal Alchemist and the original anime adaptation is Fullmetal Alchemist. But after10-15 episodes the anime caught up to the manga and instead of doing filler episodes, the made Fullmetal Alchemist a whole different series from the manga. Now, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is also the manga adaptation only that it is strictly based off the manga. It is also the popular choice over the original anime. Also, the original anime has a movie sequel: Conqueror of Shamballa. And theres also a movie based on the lines of Brotherhood: The Sacred Star of Milos.
