People in deserts work at much the same occupations as people who do not live in the desert - doctors, lawyers, nurses, teachers, farmers, miners, ranchers, truck drivers, mechanics, carpenters, etc.
People's usual occupations will vary. Your occupation is generally what you do for work and how you make a living. Some people, for instance, might be teachers; others might be shopkeepers.

Millions of people live in cities and towns around the world that are located in deserts and they have the same occupations as people who do not live in deserts.

In the Navy, yes. I don't know of any such occupation in the Army.
A professional association is one that has membership comprising people who work in that particular profession. Membership is not required for all professionals in that class, however.
