People can be mentally unstable in many ways and its not always a bad thing. If you're in a school for example then be his/hers friend as much as needed. No one really likes to be left alone or isolated, that creates more paranoia etc.. Of course if he asks for strange things, then you shouldn't help him with those.. Like if he calls someday and asks for your personal information, so that he can get his medicine from the apothecary, because he lost his own papers etc. Then use caution. But if he is a nice person, who may be suffering from social phobia or something like that (you never know), then I bet he appreciates you a lot if he feels comfortable around you. If you like being with him, then its good, if you don't like him, then take distance. If he talks strange stuff to you just say "I'm not interested!".
